Protect Your Email Address From Spammers

January 26th, 2010

Spam only occurs when the spammer is able to get your email address. They have a variety of methods for doing this, some legal and some not. Either way, the result is the same. You have become a spam victim. The single most important action that you can take to prevent spam from occurring is to keep your email address off of those lists. There are a number of ways that this can be accomplished, starting with never giving out your address to anyone whom you do not know or are not conducting business with. You wouldn’t broadcast your phone number over the internet, so why is your email any different? Be careful when putting your email address into directories or other form of printed lists. Those directories could end up on the internet giving millions of people access to your email. If, for example, you are a member of your alumni association and they decide to build a webpage with that information, your address has been exposed however unintentionally. Make sure of the privacy practices that are in place with any organization that you give your email address to.

Do not give your email address out willingly over the internet. Your email address is often required when purchasing goods. If you are willing to give them payment information, then you should feel comfortable giving them your email. However, the fact that they will process the sale in accordance with law does not mean that they won’t sell lists to spammers. The sale of goods over the internet is regulated and enforced much more stringently than address list distribution. Often it is just too difficult to prove. The site may ask you if they can share your information with their “partners” or “affiliates”. These are simply companies to whom they sell information for the purpose of advertisement – spammers. This box is almost always automatically checked for yes, so make sure you uncheck it before submitting your order.

Perhaps you would like to join a mailing list, newsgroup, or register with a certain website. Before doing so, read the privacy policy of the website involved and make sure that they will not sell or share your information with anyone else. In a forum situation do not allow others to email you via that site. They can simply post a response on the site and you can check it at your convenience. Keep your email address hidden and not viewable to others when setting up the account. Spammers will try to join mailing lists for the sole intention of harvesting the addresses of other members. If all else fails, create a junk email account. This account can be used to fulfill the requirement while keeping your real email address secret and off of any lists.

Do not respond to any spam that you receive. This includes following the opt-out link at the bottom of the page, sending irritated replies, or doing any business with a company that sends you spam. They have already shown their willingness to ignore your privacy, and in most cases, the law. Responding only confirms your email address as real and attached to someone who reads their mail. You will likely continue receiving spam from that company, and additional spam from other spammers to whom they sold your address. Understanding that the reply only confirms your identity and keeps you on those distribution lists is a key to solving your problem. Likewise, do not use auto-responders with your email. Auto-responders are away messages that automatically let those who are sending you email know that you are unavailable. This is very convenient if you are going to be gone for some time. Unfortunately, this auto-response lets the spammers know that your email address is active.

Finally, do not forward chain letter emails. Forwarded chain letters can contain hundreds of email addresses before you ever get to the body of the letter. Spammers collect these email addresses and then build distribution lists. They may also try to identify the addresses of people with whom you communicate. This would allow them the ability to sneak by any anti-spam software by pretending to be from someone that you know.

Virtual Web Servers: Perfect For Mid-Sized Web Hosting Needs

January 26th, 2010

The internet has exploded over the last ten years with many people doing more and more tasks online everyday. As the internet continues to grow, the amount of space available for web sites to expand will shrink. Another very important fact that needs to be considered when creating a web site is how you are going to host the web site.

Large companies can afford to have a dedicated web server or servers, but smaller companies and individuals usually can not afford to have a dedicated server for their web site. For these individuals there are a few alternatives available. They can either use a web hosting service to host their web sites, or they can use a virtual web server to host their web site. Both of these alternatives have strengths and weaknesses.

A web hosting plan usually allows you to upload your web files to their server and then they configure everything so that anyone on the internet can access it. With The Host Bucket these plans are not expensive, but they are also limited in the amount of options that you can configure on your own.

However since the configuration of these plans are very easy, you do not need to have a large internal I.T. department to implement your plans. Web hosting plans are also a very good fit for your web site if you do not need to have access to a database.

Virtual web servers are a great way to maximize the use of a single server to service many web sites across several domains. The virtual web server uses one server and one operating system to host many different web sites. The difference between virtual web servers and hosting plans is that you have access to mail, FTP, and all of the configuration files on the virtual server.

This gives you quite a bit more control over all of the functions that a normal web server would allow you to do. However you need to know more about configuring a web site if you use a virtual web server. The best thing about a virtual web server is that you have much more control and the ability to do many different things that you can not do with a web hosting plan.

Usually it takes a person with quite a bit of experience to be able to successfully setup, maintain, and configure a web server. The problem with this is that there are not enough of these experienced people to prepare a web server for all of the individual web sites on the internet today.

One way to help fix this problem is to use virtual web servers. A virtual web server allows one very experienced person to setup a single server that will be able to host many different web sites across many domains. This also allows different web sites to be configured individually and be able to use more resources than they would be able to use if they were not hosted on a virtual web server.

Since each web site can be fully configured, you will have quite a bit of control over all of the different features of your web site.

A virtual web server allows each web site to have its email, FTP access, and many other configuration files to be configured exactly the way you want them to be. Also a virtual web server allows access to different types of databases which can make your web site more dynamic.

Many virtual web server plans allow unlimited email addresses and built-in spam filters and virus protection. They also allow unlimited anonymous and non-anonymous FTP sites, so that you can offer file upload and downloads to your clients.

However the best feature of a virtual web server is that you have complete control over how your web site is configured to run, so you can do almost anything that you want to do. You do not have to be an expert, because many of these services offer a management tool, so that you can do all of the configurations without knowing exactly how to do it by hand.

Top Search Engine Rankings for Your Home Based Online Business

January 26th, 2010

We all should know that one of the best ways to get a massive amount of free traffic to our online business websites is by getting a high ranking with the major search engines.

That makes for a great deal of competition for the top positions, so you need to use every ethical angle you can find if you want to be successful. I have outlined three of the best methods that will greatly help you to achieve top search engine rankings.

1. Getting inbound links is essential to getting your home based online business website in the top rankings. Search engines view each link to your website as a vote. Google tells this very plainly at their website. The more votes you have, the more seriously the search engines will view your site.

Exchanging links with other websites is not as beneficial as it once was, but there is still some value to be received, especially for a new site. This needs to be handled with care. You want to exchange with good quality sites, and ones that are both related to yours and will provide value to your visitors.

Submitting your site to directories is also good. This can bring you one way links which have more value. Many directories are free and do not require a link back. These are the ones to choose in the beginning when your budget is small. Later, you can submit to some of the directories that charge a fee if you think it provides value.

Another way to gain inbound one way links is to write articles. Content is highly in demand, and if you write good informative articles you will find many article directories that will accept your articles. The resource box is your key here, so do some research on how to use a resource box, and visit some directories to get a feel for which type of articles are popular in your field.

2. Keyword selection is very important, and should have been one of the basic building blocks both in choosing what you are marketing online, and what keywords you are going to use in the marketing process. Your keywords should be the foundation of your page titles and they should be sprinkled throughout your website copy. You do want to keep some balance and not get too carried away. Too many keywords can get you penalized.

3. The content you provide on your website is very important. The job of the search engines is to provide the best match for what people are searching for online. When you build quality pages of content on your given subject you increase the possibility that the search engines will see the value and send you visitors.

It is also important to keep your website updated. If the information on your website is timely you need to take care to keep it up with the times and changes on the internet.

Add content from time to time to keep both visitors and search engines coming back. Build your home based online business with a good foundation, use these suggestions and you will begin to see the rewards. Do be patient though, it does take a little time and some concentrated good effort.

5 Simple Search Engine Strategies for Keywords

January 26th, 2010

If you’re a writer optimizing your site for the search engines, you have more considerations than just optimizing for the search engines.

The first thing you need to do is decide if you’re selling yourself, an author driven website, or selling expertise, a topic driven website.

Once you’ve made your decision, you’ll need to do your keyword research on your topic. If you’re creating an author driven website, you’ll want to make sure that you include your name in your keywords.

Here are the strategies you need to implement:

1. Optimize your website. You’ll need to optimize each page individually, so if you have a large list of keywords, then you can optimize each page for a different keyword phrase.

When you’ve finished optimizing your site, you’ll need to implement your search engine strategy.

2. Submit your site to the major search engines.
Although the major search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN are more or less true search engines because they spider sites, if you’re not linked to any other sites,
these search engines won’t find you.

You can have other sites link to you, but the problem here is that it may take awhile for the search engines to find your site and spider it even if you are linked.

You can significantly speed up the process simply by submitting to the major search engines manually. If you use a sitemap, you can submit your sitemap to both Google and Yahoo and have your site spidered within a few days.

It may take a few months to get your site completely spidered, especially if it’s a large site, but again, a sitemap can help you with this process.

3. Build backlinks to your website.
Find writing directories and other places where writers, and readers, hang out and post a link back to your site. The more links you have pointing back to your website from other relevant resources, the higher your rankings will be, and your Google page rank will be higher.

You can also find general directories to submit your website. General directories can help you with building higher page rank for your site.

4. Write articles.
Although some writers disagree with using articles as a promotion technique, claiming that you should only write articles for pay, I disagree.

When you write articles, you are giving readers a taste of your writing. You are offering value.

Articles can also help you build tons of one way backlinks to your website through article directories, as well as build a following for your writing.

Which had you rather do: get paid $25 for an article and only be paid once, or earn money every month, over and over for the same article by using it to drive traffic to your website?

5. Participate in forums and communities.
I know. This is a tough one. Many writers are introverts, or they’re not interested in marketing.

If you want to sell your writing, you have to market. Although search engines can get you in front of your readers, search engines don’t buy. Readers do.

How To Switch To HostBucket.ie Without Losing Traffic And Profits

January 26th, 2010

Switching web hosts should not be such a difficult thing to do smoothly and with minimal hassles. Yet care should be taken.

Still by taking a couple of simple precautions you can easily avoid all the common pitfalls that often accompany a simple change over.

The first thing that you must never forget is the fact that you have to establish a new hosting account with us long before closing your old web hosting one. In fact you should even go further and ensure that your old web host keeps a copy of your site for several weeks after the switch. There are some important technical reasons for this, which I will now go into.

Firstly, it takes a couple of hours, and this can stretch into a day or so, to establish a new hosting account that is active on the internet. If you have shut down everything at your old hosts, then it means that your site will not be live or reachable by any of your visitors during those hours it takes you to establish the new account.

Secondly the reason for keeping a copy of your site with your old host for a couple of weeks after you have changed hosts, has to do with something called DNS. DNS stands for domain name server. It is critical for anybody in the web hosting business to understand that computers do not use domain names to trace websites. Instead IP addresses are used. To perform the conversion and find the domain name that has been requested, a number of computers are usually involved which act as domain name servers that are able to attach certain IP addresses to specific domain names that have been requested. A DNS cannot handle all conversions so what happens is that it converts local domain names on which it has information on and passes on others to the next DNS. This will continue until the information reaches a DNS capable of making the conversion.

Now when you make a switch, it will take a while for all domain name servers to update their information on you. So some domain name servers will initially refer surfers to your old host. What this means is that if everything has been shut down then the surfer will get a page not found error message. This is precisely why it is advisable to keep a copy of your site with the old host for a few weeks after the switch to a new host so as to ensure a smooth transition free of any glitches.

Actually the root cause of most trouble when webmasters and site owners are switching hosts is that most people are very upset at the time of the switch and just want to get rid of their old host as soon as they possibly can.

Fantastico and CPanel With HostBucket.ie

January 26th, 2010

cPanel is short for Control Panel and is a graphical user interface or GUI that is web-based and designed to afford webmasters and web designers easy access to many aspects of the web hosting system.

It used to be hard, if not impossible, for most people to figure out what to do with their hosting once they paid for it.

cPanel is an interface that allows web hosting companies to offer a graphical interface to people seeking to set up and run websites on a number of RPM-based Linux platforms.

cPanel is usually interfaced with the end user via ports 2082 and 2083 with authentication accomplished through surfing to a specific web page and logging in. Because cPanel is graphically based, it is extremely easy to use and very intuitive for novice as well as veteran users to work with.

If you want to set up a blog, mailing list, php link directory or basic content management system, cPanel is the way to go.

By clicking on the happy face icon used by Fantastico, a user is taken a list of software that is grouped into various topics and offered as an easy setup and tracking system for just about anything the end-user might want to add to the Internet community.

As a result, a webmaster can concentrate on the content and quality of what’s offered from the website and not the technical aspects of getting the site up and running.

With cPanel, managing your MySQL databases are a breeze to manage, releasing hosting companies from endless help requests from confused people. cPanel manages setup and maintenance of email accounts using three different web interfaces for retrieval via the web of email coming into the account.

Raising and lowering email quotas, adding and manipulating databases, managing PGP keys, setting up crontab tasks, email and FTP tasks and more.

Via Fantastico, several add-on scripts automate the installation and upgrade of many of the popular applications like SMF, WordPress, Joomla, TikiWiki and phpBB to name a few. There are over 50 other scripts to choose from and it is constantly updated.

Choosing Domain Names for Your Business

January 26th, 2010

Let’s say that you’re creating a website for Barb’s Specialty Pet Products. Should the domain name be barbsspecialtypetproducts.com?

Perhaps — but don’t stop there. Having the right domain name, or domain names, can bring more traffic to your site.

Why more than one domain name?

One domain is all you need to set up a website. But with more domains directing to your site, you can have these additional benefits:

- Bring site visitors who type variations of your domain name

- Acquire traffic that might otherwise go to your competition

- Harness the marketing power of keyword domains

Your primary domain name

If it’s feasible, use your business or brand name in your primary domain. People will remember it and associate it with your business. Also consider the following factors when choosing your primary domain.

Domain name extensions

Should your primary domain end with .com, .net, or .biz, or with a country-specific extension such as .ca or .co.uk?

If your website is aimed at people in a specific country, having a country-specific domain can help:

- Site visitors will recognize right away that the business has a presence in the country of the extension. They may therefore be more comfortable buying from you.

- Some country-specific search results include sites with the relevant country-specific domain extension even if the site isn’t hosted in that country.

On the other hand, if you’re targeting an international audience, a country-specific domain could work against you. People from outside the country of the extension may be less inclined to buy if the business looks foreign to them.

If you want to attract both people within your country and those in other countries, have both. Each domain could direct to the same site, with each audience seeing the domain intended for them. For country-specific search results, the primary domain should be the country-specific one.

Chances are that the .com domain you want is already taken. If you use the .net or .biz version, you risk having potential site visitors go to your .com competition instead. Be sure to use the full domain name on all promotional material to reduce this risk.

Domain name length

A short domain is easier to remember, it has less risk of being mistyped, and it’ll fit easily on your business cards and correspondence.

Conversely, if a short name doesn’t represent your business, it’s more difficult for people to remember. The short names you like may already be taken anyway.

If your business name is up to three easy-to-spell words, it’ll probably work as a domain name. For a longer business name, the initials or just one or two words may be easier than remembering a combination of words.

Secondary domain names

Secondary domains directing to your site are for online use:

- For people who type your primary domain name incorrectly

- For people who search for your products or services online

Typing and spelling variations

How many ways can people spell and type your business name?

barbsspecialtypetproducts.com

barbs-specialty-pet-products.com

barbspecialtypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbsspecialitypetproducts.com

barbspecialtyproducts.com

barbspecialtyproduct.com

Hyphens aren’t recommended for your primary domain. When people tell others about your site, they’re likely to omit the hyphens. They may also forget to type them.

For secondary domains, hyphens make long domains easier to read. Each word stands out when people see your domain. However, domains such as buy-keyword-product-now.com make some people view hyphenated domains, especially those with more than one hyphen, as spam-like.

Having the words in domains separated may help some search engines recognize keywords. With Google, though, hyphens don’t make any difference.

Consider all of these variations for secondary domain names:

- With and without hyphens

- Different ways of spelling some words

- Singular and plural versions of nouns

- Extensions with .com and .net as well as a country-specific extension if relevant

What people search for

If you want to find the website for Time magazine, you might do a search for it, or you might try typing in time.com. If you do the latter, you’ll find yourself at the Time site.

This type of search behavior extends to generic words too. Searching for dog collars? Try dogcollar.com, for example, and you’ll be redirected to dogidcollar.com. Do you want life insurance? Lifeinsurance.com redirects to nmfn.com (and so does northwesternmutualfinancialnetwork.com).

While having keyword domain names may not draw a lot of site visitors, using them is a technique to consider.

How to use more than one domain

Set up your website with your primary domain, and use that domain on your correspondence and with your customers.

Point secondary domains to your site using URL forwarding (also called domain forwarding, domain redirect, or URL redirect). To have the secondary domain appear in the browser, use domain masking. You can set up these features when you log in to your account with your domain registrar (if your registrar offers these services).

With domains that are simply variations of your primary domain, you can expect additional traffic just from having set up these domains. With domains that contain keywords, you can get more from them by using them to list your site in online directories. When these domains appear in search results, searchers will see the keywords.

The next step

Once you decide on the available domains that you want, register them immediately. They might not be available tomorrow.

If you don’t already have a business name, you’ll find it easier to market your business online if you choose a primary domain and a business name together. If your first choice for a business name doesn’t work well with any available domains, consider a business name that you can easily market with an available domain. Once you’ve registered that domain name and your business name, register secondary domains and put them to use.

Is it worth registering multiple domains for one site? That depends on your site, but any variations that you don’t register will be available for competitors to register and use. If a domain is valuable to a competitor, it’s valuable to you.

Starting Home Based Internet Business

January 26th, 2010

One of the first things you will want to do when you have decided on the type of business you want to launch on the Internet is to choose a domain name, but not just any ‘old domain name.

Firstly as mentioned, you need to decide on the type of business you are going to operate, then try to find a domain name that is associated with the business you have decided upon, this is where some brainstorming is going to have to come in. Write down on a list a number of possible ideas that pop in to your head. Swap the words around and ask friends and family if they make sense to them. Remember your domain name is your business name to the world. It represents both you, along with your business, it is therefore extremely important that you choose your domain name carefully.

Although there are numerous extensions today of a domain name (e.g. .com, .net, and .biz to name only a few), go for a .com as most people think of web addresses that finish with a .com, especially if you are working towards a world wide market. Try to avoid hyphens also, one thing is that some servers don’t like to see them, but more importantly for you is that if someone is typing the web domain in to their address bar in the browser, if they forget one hyphen or accidentally use an underscore then they may just be directed to someone else’s web site, which may turn out to be a competitor or they just get a cannot find the web page error, the out come of which is you just end up loosing that visitor who could have been a potential customer.

If you have been tempted to use a free hosting service that gives you a domain name as an extension of there own hosting service, (e.g. http://thehostingcompany/nowyourname.com or something similar, DON’T do it, you will loose credibility before you even begin.

I have used many companies in the past to register many of my domain names, now take the company I now use for example. Apart from them being one of the cheapest around that I found, they have many other features that you just could not find elsewhere. One really cool feature I found was when you put in the name you have decided upon and you are checking it’s availability, if it’s already been taken, it returns many similar names that you can then ponder upon that you may not have thought of beforehand. It also had the facility to register many domain names all at once.

Once you have made your decision on your domain, when you come to finally registering your domain name, you will be presented with the option of keeping your domain name private, an excellent feature that I recommend and one you should take advantage of.

A private domain registration will keep your information (name, address, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from reaching your email box. I certainly wish this had been available when I created my first web site.

So What Is In A Domain Name?

January 26th, 2010

One of the most essential components of the internet is the domain name. It is the identity of your website on the internet. It distinguishes your site from the others and makes it stand out. No two organizations can have the same domain name. These domain names cannot really be bought but can only be leased for a period of 1 to 10 years.

They are many factors involved in choosing a domain name. Firstly it should be catchy and easy to remember so that visitors remember the name easily the next time. Also, it should be simple and should contain only a few characters so that people do not mistype the name and land up on some other site. You should choose a domain name which describes your business clearly. Make sure to mention the name quite often on your site so as to promote your site on search engines. But even if you do not like your domain name later and think you can improvise on it then you can always sell it and make some money.

Buy your name in as many domains as possible like .com, .net or .biz. By doing this you would prevent anyone else from buying a name similar to yours and thereby intercepting your business. For this purpose you will have to buy all these domain names as soon as possible or else you would be regretting later over someone else choosing the domain name of your choice.

Also when choosing a name, make sure that it is nowhere close to that of your competitors. In this case, one small mistype by the customer might take him to the wrong site and you will lose potential business.

Always make it a point to buy alternative domain names. For example if the domain name of your choice is example.com or .net then you should also buy with hyphens example.com and .net. You do not have to maintain each of the sites but you can simply link them to your main site. This is not an expensive practice as domain names are dirt cheap and it helps you to be on the safer side.

You need not worry if all the domain names you like are already being used. These domain names, as mentioned earlier, can be rented only for a maximum period of 10 years. So you can choose a domain name whose duration has come to an end and which is already a hit with the search engines and thereby get traffic to your site easily without doing much.

So take your time to choose a domain name that will serve your purpose the best but do not take too long as it is an important factor in the growth of your business and you should not neglect it.

Your Identity – Picking A Domain Name To Register

January 26th, 2010

Perhaps the most poignant scene in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible happens at the end when the protagonist, John Proctor, refuses to sign his name on a false confession. When asked why he refuses to sign the document, even though it could save his life he cries out in anguish, “Because it is my name. It is the only name I will ever have.” It is a heartfelt and stunning reminder that our identity begins at birth when our parents name us. A web site also depends on its name, which is why choosing a domain name that best represents your site and its purpose is something to be done very carefully indeed.

Choose the right name

When you are ready to start a web site don’t just run to the first registry you can find and type in the first thing you think of. Sit down and do some research about your site and what you hope it will accomplish. What is the goal of your site? What kind of images do you want customers to associate with it? If you could sum up your site in one word, what would that word be? The best domain names tend to be names that are short and easy to remember and something to do with the topic or service your web site provides. If you are going to attempt humor with your domain name, make sure it’s a joke that not just you can understand. Overall, the name should add to the quality of your web site not distract from it.

Check availability

As you’re picking a name for your web site, one of the common things to happen is you find the absolutely most perfect name possible, go to the registry and type in the name in the lookup box and lo and behold – its already taken. Then you have a problem. You’re already sold on the idea, and now it’s not workable. Make sure to have a lookup box from the registry available as you are choosing the name for your domain site so you can check availability instantly. You should also check names that are similar to the domain name you are choosing to make sure there won’t be confusion later on in and your advertising doesn’t accidentally send your customer to someone else’s site.

Pick the right extension

Many registrars will also let you choose the extension along with your domain name. That means that you get to choose whether your domain name will be a.com. or .net .biz or any of the other approved for public use extension names. For Ireland this extension is .ie.  Se web search engines and Irish web users know your site is Irish. Be sure to pick one that does not mislead your customers or clientele. If you’re really selling something, choosing an .org which is largely for nonprofit organizations or a .net which is for social networking, may seem like a brilliant way to get people to your site. However, customers know when they’ve been conned and it tends to backfire on the business. Choose the proper extension for what you’re doing and let your site’s integrity sell itself.

What’s in a name? Everything. Careful and thoughtful picking and use of the name for your web site will help keep your enterprise on the top of its game.
